Obituary For James Hamel, Mobile Daily Register,
Sunday, January 27, 1889 (transcription)

FOUND IN THE CREEK
DISCOVERY OF THE BODY OF A MAN FROM OHIO

The body of James HAMEL
, a stranger, who arrived here from Jacksonville,
Florida, a few weeks ago, was found in the water of One-mile Creek yesterday
morning, near the crossing of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad. The deceased was 53 years of age and a resident of North Amherst, Lorraine county, Ohio, where he leaves a wife, two sons and a daughter.
The coroner, Dr. H. P. Hirshfeldt, was called to view the body, and gave a
certificate of death from drowning. It is learned that the deceased while a
boarder at the Henderson House, on Government street, attempted some days ago to commit suicide with laudenum. No other cause can be assigned for his desire to leave the world save that he was a sufferer at times from asthma. A letter was found on his person, giving the address of his family.
The remains were taken in charge by Undertaker Shawan, who embalmed them, awaiting responses to telegrams.
